Stock Code: 610-EKT-001
Price: £7.95 each

Ektara is the most ancient form of string instrument found in the Eastern parts of India.
The playing style of this instrument is a simultaneous pluck and gong, matching the rhythm of the music. Also, the ektara is used for Sufi chanting as well as by the Bauls of Bengal. The strings of the ektara give a range of tones by applying pressure at various points along the neck. This is a musical instrument that does not have markings for notes, and is played by assumption. The various sizes are a soprano ektara, tenor ektara, or bass ektara. The bass ektara, sometimes called a dotara often has two strings.

Flute
Size: 39cm

Stock Code: 610-FLU-001
Price: £3.95 each

Quantity

Indian flutes may be called many things in India: bansi, bansuri, murali, venua and many more. The bansuri is not just a musical instrument, because it has a great cultural and religious significance. Typically made of bamboo or reed.  There are two varieties; transverse and fipple.  The transverse variety is nothing more than a length of bamboo with holes cut into it.  This is the preferred flute for classical music because the embouchure gives added flexibility and control.  The fipple variety is found in the folk and filmi styles, but seldom used for serious music.  This is usually considered to be just a toy because the absence of any embouchure limits the flexibility of the instrument.

Ghungroo (Leather)
Size: 12cm

Stock Code: 610-GHU-001
Price: £5.45 each

Quantity

A ghungroo is one of many small metallic bells strung together to form ghungroos, a musical accessory tied to the feet of classical Indian dancers. The sounds produced by ghungroos vary greatly in pitch depending on their metallic composition and size. Ghungroos serve to accentuate the rhythmic aspects of the dance and allow complex footwork to be heard by the audience. They are worn immediately above the ankle, resting on the lateral malleolus and medial malleolus. A string of ghungroos can range from 50 to greater than 200 bells knotted together. A novice child dancer may start with 50 and slowly add more as she grows older and advances in her technical ability. Ghungroos are worn in traditional performances of the classical Indian dance forms: bharatnatyam, kuchipudi, odissi, and kathak.

Dholak 18 inches

Stock Code: 610-DHO-001
Price: £18.95 plus £6.00 carriage

Quantity

Dholak is a very popular folk drum of northern India.  It is barrel shaped with a simple membrane on the right hand side; basically it is just a smaller version of the dhol.  The left hand is also a single membrane with a special application on the inner surface.  This application is a mixture of tar, clay and sand (dholak masala) which lowers the pitch and provides a well defined tone.  There are two ways of tightening the dholak.  Sometimes they are laced with rope, in which case, a series of metal rings are pulled to tighten the instrument.  Sometimes metal turnbuckles are employed.  It is said that this instrument used to occupy a position of considerable prestige.  Today it is merely relegated to filmi and folk music.

Tabla Pair with Copper Base 3kg

Stock Code: 610-TAB-002
Price: £49.95 plus £6.00 carriage

Quantity

Tabla
is a pair of drums.  Consisting of a small right hand drum called dayan and a larger metal one called bayan.

The tabla has an interesting construction.  The dayan (right hand drum) is almost always made of wood.  The diameter at the membrane may run from just under five inches to over six inches.  The bayan (left hand drum) may be made of iron, aluminium, copper, steel, or clay; yet brass with a nickel or chrome plate is the most common material.  Undoubtedly the most striking characteristic of the tabla is the large black spot on each of the playing surfaces.  These black spots are a mixture of gum, soot, and iron filings.  Their function is to create the bell-like timbre that is characteristic of the instrument.

Although the origin of tabla is somewhat obscure, it is generally belived that it evolved from the barrel shaped drum called pakhawaj.  This was about three hundred years ago.
